The ANZAC Memorial
The ANZAC Memorial is a significant monument erected in 1934 to commemorate the memory of those Australians who served their country in the Great War of 1914-18 (WW1). In 1984 it was rededicated to all those Australians who have served in all wars on behalf of our nation. The Memorial is an iconic granite clad structure in the Art Deco architectural style and stands within a prominent and complementary parkland setting. The Government Architect’s Office has recently completed a major capital works program involving conservation of the building’s fabric, as well as enhancement of essential services and facilities and the refurbishment of key public spaces. The current project has provided a high quality, permanent exhibition and a small travelling exhibition /education and presentation room in the former Assembly Hall. The works also include upgraded offices and amenities for memorial staff and the restoration of remaining original offices and counselling rooms. The discreet insertion of a lift to provide equitable access between the basement, the ground floor and the podium level’s Hall of Memory was also an important element of the project.
