Burrawang Walk, The Meeting Place Precinct
The Meeting Place Precinct is the key visitor precinct within Botany Bay National Park at Kurnell which is an icon park for its cultural significance. It is the place on the east coast of first contact in 1770 between indigenous Australians and the crew of the bark Endeavour under the command of James Cook. It is symbolic as a ‘meeting place ‘ of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures and may be seen as the point of initiation of a multi-cultural nation and more recently as a site of reconciliation. GAO and Freeman Ryan Design worked together to create an interpretive landscape experience that allows the visitor to experience the parallel cultural histories presented by the site in an environment which encourages contemplation and discussion. Burrawang Walk defines the Meeting Place Precinct and invites the visitor to engage in a process of discovery by taking them through a variety of landscape types to significant points on the site. The cultural, historical, maritime and environmental stories have been expressed in many ways, but are established and meshed with a reading of the site gained experientially. New elements such as a sandstone gathering area, soundscape, reinstated jetty and bridge over the freshwater stream have been consciously selected as contemporary insertions in a disparate landscape to provide a greater understanding of the site.
