Garie Surf Safety Centre

Garie Surf Safety Centre

Garie Surf Safety Centre was designed by Michael Tawa with the Design Development and Documentation by Darryl Jackson Robin Dyke Architects under direction of the Government Architect’s Office.

The building is located at Garie beach in the Royal National Park on the edge of southern Sydney. It runs perpendicular to the beach & nestles into the base of the southern headland, affording a northerly aspect at the edge of the car park. The openness of the valley is maintained and the building is protected from the harsh southerly winds.

The centre is broken up into three separate buildings. The building closest to the beach is two storey & contains the surf club on the upper level overlooking the beach & community hall & kiosk below. The other two buildings are single storey. The central building contains the boat shed & Caretaker’s flat & the building furthest away from the beach contains the ablution facilities. The buildings are largely made of timber with a stainless steel frame. Timber slats are a major feature of the building. The intention is for the building to age with the timber greying over time.

The centre has minimal environmental impact, because it collects its own water with above & below ground tanks, generates its own power with solar panels & a back-up diesel generator and treats much of its own waste with a biomax system.
