Acmena Juvenile Justice Centre

Acmena Juvenile Justice Centre

The new 15 Bed Accommodation Pod and separate ETU is an addition to an existing 30 bed centre, built some 11 years ago.

This project is a development of the standard accommodation pod design by removing the school wing off the courtyard and placing it some 90 metres to the south, alongside the established school.

The new Pod incorporates its own holding room, offices, games and group rooms all organized around an enclosed courtyard forming its social hub.

The pods plan provides excellent views form the centrally located Youth Workers Office into all key spaces, including the large and level courtyard where both active and passive games are possible.

Passive design techniques include natural light penetration from south facing skylights to the centre of the plan, cross ventilation of living areas, timed showers, sail structure over the courtyard and water harvesting to the existing onsite dams.

All complemented by engineering services designed in accordance with Part J of the BCA.

Materials have been selected to respond to the existing centre and its steep landscape, to provide as far as possible, a low maintenance environment.

This will also allow the Pod and ETU to stand as new elements, of their time that will complement the existing centre as it grows.
